Chafee pays a visit to troops in Afghanistan
By IAN DONNIS
PROVIDENCE, RI – Governor Lincoln Chafee visited with Rhode Island soldiers in Afghanistan Wednesday as part of a trip paid for by the U.S. Defense Department. Chafee is steering clear of criticizing the war before his expected return Friday.
Chafee has warned in the past about the danger of what he calls "foreign entanglements." As a U.S. senator, he was the only Republican to vote against the war in Iraq. Chafee says his current trip is mainly to watch and listen.
"I'm really not to cast judgment on what we're doing and how we're doing. It's more just to hear from the troops that are here and let them know as captain general of the National Guard, I care about how they're doing and just see exactly what they're doing both in Kuwait and here in Afghanistan."
Chafee says he visited a hospital and a forward operating base during his trip. He says the morale of the Rhode Island troops is good even as they face big challenges.
