Providence, RI – Governor Lincoln Chafee says critics of his proposed tax hikes haven't offered any of their own solutions for closing the state's budget deficit.
"There's just been critic after critic without offering any constructive alternative," Chafee said. "I'm still waiting and open-minded to anybody that has a better idea."
Chafee's plan to raise more than 160 million dollars in revenue through new taxes has come under attack from a variety of observers.
With a full page ad, the Providence Sunday Journal criticized Chafee's plan to tax newspaper sales. Some small businesses and former state revenue director Gary Sasse have also rapped the governor's proposed sales tax expansion.
