Congressman David Cicilline says the across the board spending cuts known as the sequester are a distraction from more important issues in Washington. He predicts that public outrage about the impact of across the board spending cuts will eventually lead to a new budget agreement.

Cicilline says the so-called sequester will cut 750,000 jobs by the end of the year and cause reductions in federally funded services. “I think when people begin to feel the effects of this around the country, they’re going to reach out to their members of Congress and demand that they be part of a solution.”

He says Congress reaching a budget agreement would raise the focus on rebuilding the economy, ending US involvement in the war in Afghanistan, and fostering a more competitive education system. “We have a lot on our agenda and it can not be that all we do is go from one manufactured crisis to another and as a result not do the work that is expected for us to do over the next two years."

Cicilline spoke after visiting a Bristol company facing reduced military contracts due to the sequester.
