PROVIDENCE, RI – Colombians began coming to Central Falls to work in the city's mills 50 years ago. With the election Tuesday of James Diossa, Central Falls now has its first Colombian-American mayor. Diossa's victory has special meaning for one of his campaign advisers, Gonzalo Cuervo, since Cuervo's father was part of the first cluster of Colombians to settle in Rhode Island.
As Cuervo tells RIPR Political Reporter, Ian Donnis, Colombians form the state's fourth-largest Latino group, after Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Guatemalans.
