Construction began today at a brand new nursing school in Providence. The project is a collaboration between three institutions.
The University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College and Brown University are spearheading the venture. The school will move into a now-abandoned power plant located just outside downtown Providence. The renovation is estimated to cost more than $200 million. The new nursing school will be a joint education center for URI and RIC. Brown will use space for administrative offices. In addition to the school, a parking garage and student housing are planned.
Officials estimate the project will create nearly 900 jobs during construction. The nursing school will also help push the medical and education economy the city is hoping to boost in the area.
