Crackdown this weekend on drinking and boating
By CATHERINE WELCH
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Coast Guard and state boating agencies will be cracking down on boating and drinking.
The Coast Guard says alcohol is the leading cause of boating deaths. And they'll be looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content is .08 or higher.
If caught, boaters will be required to get off the water, have their vessel impounded, possibly be arrested, face fines, and some will lose boating privileges.
The crackdown is dubbed "Operation Dry Water" and across the country last year it netted 322 arrests for Boating Under the Influence and more than 4,000 warnings. The operation starts Friday and runs through Saturday.
