PROVIDENCE, RI – The barge that's been submerged under Newport's Pell Bridge since Halloween has surfaced.
The U.S. Coast Guard says salvage crews hoisted the barge and rigged lines to remove nearly 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The Coast Guard says the recovery is going well despite the rainy weather.
The barge was being used as a staging area for crews painting the Newport Pell Bridge when it sank during a rare Halloween snowstorm. Painting supplies and other hazardous materials were removed before the storm hit.
The Coast Guard says depending on the weather, the goal now is to remove the barge later this week.
