Rhode Islanders have just 12 days left to enroll in health insurance coverage through the state’s online marketplace, HealthSource RI, if they want to be covered as of January 1st. HealthSource RI officials say most applicants should find the process problem-free.
You’ve probably heard about the technical problems that have plagued the federal health insurance exchange – healthcare.gov. But not so in Rhode Island, says HealthSource RI spokeswoman Dara Chadwick.
“And because we are our own entity, we’re not seeing the same problems that the federal exchanges are seeing.”
Chadwick said Rhode Island’s online health insurance marketplace is working smoothly, with a few minor, intermittent glitches, like mistaken addresses or misspelled names. Applications are going through, and payment is being accepted, though developers are putting the finishing touches on a few back-end processes. But Chadwick says none of that should prevent people from signing up for a health insurance plan.
If you want coverage that begins January 1st, you’ll have to pay your first month’s premium by December 23rd. (Right now, that payment must be in the form of a check or money order; no credit cards). After that, open enrollment for individuals is only open through March 2014. Small businesses can sign up throughout the year.
