A different inaugural celebration
By MEGAN HALL
Providence, RI – There was no ball with long gowns and tuxedos this year, but Rhode Islanders still gathered to celebrate the new governor and the state general officers last night.
Ruth's Chris Steak House next to Providence's Waterplace Park was packed with well wishers at the party in honor of Governor Lincoln Chafee. He made a quick walk around the room, shaking hands and posing for pictures.
Then Chafee offered a very brief speech. "Frankly, I'm kind of all speechified out," he said with a laugh. "So let's crank up the music and just once again, thank you very, very much."
Chafee opted to save money this year by hosting a WaterFire and five small events funded entirely by private donations.
He said he planned to party the rest of the night and take his daughter to school in the morning before he began his first full day as Governor.
