Drivers asked to "dump the pump"

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Sierra Club's Rhode Island chapter is urging drivers to "dump the pump" Thursday. It's asking drivers to either refrain from buying gas or to leave the car at home and use alternative transportation.

The Sierra Club's Abel Collins says he knows it's hard to leave the car at home. "I have a diesel myself and I use it all the time, I don't have ready access to public transit. And that's really just an argument for really investing in better public transit service."

Collins says if people can't ditch their cars for the day, he hopes the event will raise awareness of US dependence on foreign oil and rising carbon emissions.
