Earthquake felt in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, RI – If you felt the earth move under your feet just before two o'clock this afternoon you were probably feeling a 5.9 earthquake that was centered near Richmond, Virginia. It was felt as far west as Chicago and as far north as Boston.

Probate Judge John Martinelli was working in his office on the 5th floor of Providence City Hall when he felt the earthquake.

"Our desks were moving and the building was visibly moving so we all got out of there," Martinelli told Rhode Island Public Radio. Martinelli encouraged everyone he saw to follow him. Doreen Collins didn't hesitate.

"I felt the earth move. That hasn't happened to me in a long time. I've been married for quite a while. So I'll take earth movement wherever I can get it," Collins said.

The Statehouse and at least two other state buildings were also evacuated.
