FAA partial shutdown stalls TF Green runway project
By CATHERINE WELCH
PROVIDENCE, RI – Officials at TF Green airport say the partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration is slowing down plans to expand the airport's runway.
Rhode Island Airport Corporation CEO Kevin Dillon says a decision on the runway's environmental impact was supposed to be issued at the end of this month, but the authors have been furloughed thanks to the shutdown. And that could delay construction for another year.
"I think if it's resolved within the next couple of weeks, the delay won't really be that impactful," says Dillon. "However if this drags on further into the fall we could lose a full construction season."
Dillon says the partial shutdown stopped an FAA project working on the fire alarm system inside the control tower.
