Family says goodbye to guardsman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Governor Lincoln Chafee and Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts were on hand Thursday morning for the funeral of a Pawtucket soldier who died in an accident in Afghanistan.

Specialist Dennis Poulin died at a hospital in Germany of injuries sustained in a rollover accident. His parents were at his side.

At his funeral Thursday, Poulin was remembered as a loving son and father, a protective older brother and a dutiful soldier.

Massachusetts National Guard Adjutant General Joseph Carter spoke of Poulin's love for his five-year-old son, Nikolous.

"All the members of the unit knew about Nikolous," says Carter. "Even if they never met him they felt as though they did because Spc. Poulin spoke so frequently of him, telling stories about him and keeping everyone informed of his maturation."

Nikolous squirmed in a relative's arms as his father's love for him was remembered. Specialist Poulin was 26-years-old.
