Providence, R.I. – 280 Rhode Island National Guard soldiers will deploy to Kuwait over the next few days. They will provide logistic support in Kuwait and security for convoys traveling into northern Iraq during their year-long deployment.
The Rhode Island National Guard's Lt. Col. Denis Riel says by next June 800 soldiers will be deployed to the Middle East.
"In total we'll have about 47 percent of our Army National Guard assets serving in either Kuwait or Afghanistan," Riel says.
Riel says once all of those soldiers are deployed Rhode Island will have the 2nd highest deployment rate per capita.
