Former Gov. J. Joseph Garrahy laid to rest

PROVIDENCE, RI – Former Governor J. Joseph Garrahy has been laid to rest after a funeral attended by powerful politicians and ordinary citizens. He was remembered as a man who never forgot his humble roots.

The Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul was nearly full for the funeral of former Governor Joe Garrahy, who died last week at the age of 81.

Father Marcel Taillon quoted the former governor's four-year-old granddaughter, Ellie, in his eulogy. She wrote these words in four colored pens hours after his death.

"Hi Poppy. I hope you are feeling better now. You are so blessed to be in heaven with God. You led the world so far. You stopped a huge snow storm and your shirt is very popular. Love, Ellie."

The note referenced Garrahy's frequent television appearances in a plaid shirt during the blizzard of '78.
