Former N. Providence councilmen to enter pleas this week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three former North Providence town councilmen and a businessman are slated to plead guilty today and tomorrow to corruption charges in a series of bribery and extortion
schemes.

Former councilmen Joseph Burchfield and Raymond Douglas III are scheduled to enter their pleas in U.S. District Court in Providence today, as is Edward Imondi, a developer accused of acting as a middleman in the scheme.

The third former councilman, John Zambarano, is scheduled to enter his plea tomorrow.

Prosecutors have accused Burchfield, Douglas and Zambarano of soliciting bribes from businessmen in North Providence. They say Imondi facilitated one of the bribes.

Zambarano is also charged in a separate insurance fraud scheme, to which he has agreed to plead guilty.
