PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A former Rhode Island state senator has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.
Former state senator Christopher Maselli has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for committing eight counts of bank fraud to obtain $1.7 million in loans.
Federal judge Mary Lisi rejected his request to serve just one day in jail and five years of supervised release, saying that Congress expects courts to deal more harshly with white collar crime.
Maselli pleaded guilty in June to lying about his income and falsifying bank records. He resigned his state senate seat and surrendered his law license.
Before the sentence was imposed Maselli said he would continue to work to pay off the financial obligations and regain the trust of the court, his family and his community.
