Gemma announces bid for RI congressional seat

Providence, R.I. – Businessman and philanthropist Anthony Gemma this morning announced his Democratic campaign for the congressional seat held by Patrick Kennedy.

Gemma told supporters at a Providence Place movie theater that he wants to involve more people in shaping government decisions. He says Rhode Island's top state and federal officials should also hold "board" meetings to work together on major issues.

"I do not believe individually any elected official is working with ill intent," Gemma says. "I do believe that collectively they're not communicating with each other. And this board is created so they can communicate federal through state."

Gemma formerly operated Gem plumbing. He is also president of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

The other Democrats running for Kennedy's seat are Providence Mayor David Cicilline, former state Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch, and state Rep. David Segal.
