Governor halts medical marijuana dispensaries

PROVIDENCE, RI – Governor Lincoln Chafee is putting the brakes on Rhode Island's medical marijuana dispensaries.

Following a letter from U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha warning that the so called compassion centers violate federal law, Chafee is halting any efforts to license the dispensaries. Spokesman Michael Trainor says Chafee wants to talk with governors who received similar letters about what to do.

"In an abundance of caution," says Trainor, "let's take a time out and understand what is going on here."

Trainor says there's no timeline for when the Governor might complete those conversations about how to move forward with Rhode Island's medical marijuana dispensaries.

Rhode Island's General Assembly legalized state compassion centers in 2009.Three were set to open this summer or early fall.
