Homeless face approaching winter

PROVIDENCE, RI – A new emergency homeless shelter is opening for the winter Wednesday morning at Emmanuel House in Providence. The Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless says nearly 200 people throughout the state are sleeping outside every night, and that as temperatures drop the state needs to increase its winter shelter capacity by almost 300 spaces. Advocates also report that homeless numbers are up six percent from this time last year; a quarter of those sleeping in shelters are children.
