How Children Succeed

RIPR – Thomas Edison, perhaps the epitome of inventive genius, once mused about his unsuccessful attempts to create a storage battery. Edison said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Edison's astute perspective offers a compelling insight about human resilience, about our capacity to persist when things don't go as planned and when we stumble in life, as we all do. Michael Obel-Omia shares his own wise counsel about what it takes for children to navigate life's choppy waters and, ultimately, thrive.

Michael Obel-Omia is head of the Paul Cuffee School in Providence. He has been working in education as a teacher, coach, administrator, and school leader since 1988. Obel-Omia lives with his wife, Carolyn, and three children in Barrington.
