Providence, R.I. – Hundreds of people attended a public hearing Tuesday night in Warwick where supporters and opponents weighed in on an expansion project proposed for T.F. Green airport.
There are three alternatives, but the preferred option calls for expanding the main runway to the south by a little more than 1,500 feet. Supporters, including the Providence Chamber, say a longer runway will allow T.F. Green to compete with other New England airports for direct flight across country.
But Cranston resident Hope Pilkington says that's a misguided goal.
"It's big enough for Rhode Island," Pilkington says. "This is a small state. We're in competition that's what it's about. It's about business, that's all it's about."
Other opponents say they're concerned about the impact airplane noise will have on residents and nearby school children. The airport expansion comment period ends September 15.
