Providence, RI – Slippery roads and piles of snow are starting to take a toll on Rhode Islanders' health.
Nick Stahl with Westerly Hospital says the emergency room has seen an increase in injuries from falls on the ice as well as accidents with snow blowers. He says several patients have lost fingers from cleaning out the machines with their hands.
"We've tried to get out the word that people need to shut off snow blowers and clear them with an instrument rather than one's hands," he says, "but there have been dozens of injuries of that sort."
Stahl says he doesn't know the exact number of patients who've lost their fingers in snow blower accidents, but the rate of injuries is starting to concern Westerly's emergency department.
