Hundreds of kites will fly over Brenton Point this weekend for Newport’s annual Kite Festival. The festival has been going on for more than twenty years.

Festival organizer Ron Kitt says the event is a way to expose people to the sport of kiting.

“People come from all over the world to come to this kite festival. And they’ve been coming to it for so many years,” said Kitt. “New kids are born every year, they grow up a little bit, then you have grandmas and grandpas that bring their young children out. So it’s always bringing new blood into Rhode Island and into the city.”

Kitt says last year’s event attracted thousands of visitors. This year’s festival stretches from Saturday into Sunday afternoon.
