It's election day for voters in Providence's Ward 9

PROVIDENCE, RI – The polls open 7:00 am Tuesday in Providence where voters in Ward 9 will decide who will fill the seat of Miguel Luna, who died back in August.


The heavily Latino 9th Ward stretches across lower south Providence covering the area between Broad and Elmwood Streets.


Miguel Luna had represented the district since he was elected to the Providence City Council in 2002. He died last August after suffering a heart attack.


The two candidates vying for the seat are Democrat Carmen Castillo and Republican Christian Chirino.


The Rhode Island Secretary of State's office says polls open at 7:00 am and close at 8:00 pm.
