“The Polka King,” starring actor and musician Jack Black is scheduled to begin filming in Rhode Island later this summer. State officials have announced principal photography slated to begin in mid-July and last through mid-August at “various locations” in the state.

“With our unique locations in close proximity and an organized talent pool of local artists and professional technicians, Rhode Island is the perfect place to make a successful movie,” said Governor Gina Raimondo in the official announcement.

The film’s writer and director, Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky, have worked in the Ocean State before, shooting scenes for their indie comedy “Infinitely Polar Bear” in 2013. The pair appears happy to return.

We are thrilled to be back in Rhode Island, home to the best crew and greatest locations,” Forbes and Wolodarsky said in a statement.

Inspired by a true story, “The Polka King” tells the story of Pennsylvania musician Jan Lewan, whose plan to get rich landed him in prison.

“The script is superbly written and we look forward to seeing Jack Black unleash his talent and soar as he portrays this provocative character,” said Rhode Island Film & TV Office Executive Director Steven Feinberg.

State officials also touted the potential economic boost from bringing more film and television production to Rhode Island. In this case, Pawtucket will host production offices, and Mayor Donald Grebien hinted the city might also serve as a backdrop for scenes in the film.

“Pawtucket is thrilled to welcome Jack Black and “The Polka King” to our great city,” Grebien said. “It’s truly exciting to have the film’s production headquarters in the city’s Armory Arts District in historic downtown, and that a number of local Pawtucket businesses are being considered for film locations.”
