Johnston seeks legislation to give tax deliquents more time

Providence, RI – Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena is seeking legislation that would give extra time for tax-delinquents to catch up on millions in overdue motor-vehicle and property taxes without paying penalties or interest. While the town typically hires a law firm to pursue the money at a substantial cost, the temporary amnesty would give taxpayers 45 days to pay any taxes owed prior to July 1, 2010. The Johnston Town Council voted unanimously to seek legislative approval of the amnesty proposal at a meeting Monday.
