South Kingston, R.I. – Jurors in the trial of a former Rhode Island state trooper accused of assaulting a man in police custody have started deliberations.
The jury deliberated for about two hours Wednesday after hearing closing statements from prosecutors and defense lawyers in the trial of Jeffrey Clark.
Clark is being retried for felony assault and other charges for allegedly punching William Skwirz Jr. as Skwirz sat handcuffed in the back of a South Kingstown police cruiser.
The alleged assault occurred over Labor Day weekend 2004 during a fight that began over a barking dog.
The state Supreme Court last year overturned Clark's convictions from an earlier trial, citing errors by the trial judge.
Clark's lawyer says the state's case is riddled with inconsistencies.
