Lanes reopen after fatal accident on I-95

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – State Police say traffic is moving smoothly on Interstate 95 following a fatal accident early this morning in Providence.

Several lanes were closed until 6 this morning after authorities say a driver traveling in the wrong direction in the high speed lane of 95 North collided head on with a driver traveling in the correct direction at around 4:20.

State Police say the operator of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital and the other driver was hospitalized with serious injuries.

When asked if alcohol played a role in the crash, Lt. Michael Gill said the case is still under investigation. The names of the drivers are being withheld as authorities notify family members.
