PROVIDENCE, RI – Congressman Jim Langevin signed an agreement Friday to pay $127,000 to the state board of elections. The payment resolves a dispute over campaign donations.
The dispute was over donations made by Congressional campaign committees to help Langevin pay off debt from his run for Rhode Island Secretary of State.
The donations are legal under federal law, but violate state elections law. Only committees registered in the state are allowed to make contributions to campaigns for a state office.
Langevin agreed to pay an amount equal to the $63,500 in donations along with a matching fine.
