Lawmakers consider further protection from utility shut-offs
By Lydia Rogers
(PROVIDENCE, RI)There are two bills on the agenda of the Rhode Island House Committee on Corporations Tuesday related to public utility companies.
One would block utility companies from shutting off the service of any customer on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or state holiday.
The other bill would give consumers the choice of having smart technology read their meters. The bill under consideration would allow utility customers to accept a wireless smart reader, to require the utility use a wired smart reader, or to completely decline the installation of smart meter technology.
