Lawmakers to re-introduce marijuana decriminalization bill

Providence, RI – The Libertarian Party of Rhode Island is renewing its effort to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Party treasurer Tony Jones says Senator Joshua Miller and Representative John Edwards will introduce legislation similar to a bill defeated last year.

"The latest poll nationwide said a record high - 50% of Americans - are for the legalization of marijuana," Jones says. "This we think is going to be possibly the best year for it. Governor Chafee has said in the past that he would sign it into law if it made it through the houses."

Currently, possession of up to an ounce of marijuana carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and up to a $500 fine. The proposed legislation would eliminate the jail time and lower the fine to $150.
