PROVIDENCE, RI – The president of Liberia made a surprise visit to Rhode Island to meet with the state's Liberian community yesterday.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also stopped by the Statehouse to thank Governor Lincoln Chafee for his support in the aftermath of her country's civil war.
Rhode Island has one of the nation's largest Liberian communities. And Sirleaf says that conditions in her country have improved to the point that many Liberians who fled during the civil war are now returning.
Sirleaf was the first woman elected to lead an African nation.
She's in Massachusetts today, speaking at Harvard University's commencement.
