Local Filipino Community Starts Fund For Victims of Typhoon Haiyan

The Filipino-American Association of Newport County has launched a relief fund for victims of the typhoon.

Association president Chester Gotauco said they will soon announce collection sites for items of clothing and household goods. More immediately, they’re requesting cash donations.

Gotauco said several hundred Filipinos call Rhode Island home and many of them are worried about relatives.

"I think they’re in shock. It’s like almost incomprehensible what’s happening. And they just don’t know what to do," said Gotauco.

An estimated ten thousand people have been killed by the typhoon that slammed into the Philippines Saturday.
