Local Nonprofit Fighting Malnutrition In Philippines

Nov 28, 2013

Employees at a Rhode Island company are working through the holiday to bring much-needed relief to the Philippines. Edesia manufactures food supplements and a peanut butter paste called Plumpy Nut that reverses the effects of malnutrition. Founder Navyn Salem says the disaster in the Philippines has put many children at risk of malnutrition, and many are starving. So they’ll be working almost around the clock to prepare shipments.

"We’re working with the World Food Program on restocking their hubs because they’ve unloaded everything from their hubs to respond to the disaster, and we’re also working with Save the Children on doing an airlift probably on Monday," said Salem.

Salem says it was already a busy time helping to feed people in war-torn Syria. Her company Edesia is currently looking to expand operations in a new facility in Providence.
