PROVIDENCE, RI – One of the Republicans hoping to challenge Democrat David Cicilline for the 1st Congressional seat has dropped out of the race. John Loughlin's spokesman Mike Napolitano says Loughlin doesn't want to divide the Republican party.
"The goal in Rhode Island is to make sure David Cicilline does not get re-elected," says Napolitano, "and he felt that a heated Republican primary with a lot of money being spent would weaken candidates going into the general election."
Loughlin recently returned from several months of military service in Iraq. He has been vocal in criticizing Cicilline's handling of city finances while serving as mayor of Providence, calling for a federal investigation. Loughlin has not endorsed a candidate for the 1st Congressional seat.
