Providence, R.I. – State Attorney General Patrick Lynch is giving up his candidacy for governor, and is instead backing General Treasurer Frank Caprio. He says that by competing with Caprio - now the lone Democrat in the race - he would waste valuable resources and leave the state vulnerable to electing the wrong man for the job.
"Too often in election cycles, Rhode Islanders have gotten the wrong leadership because of divisive, costly primary battles," Lynch said in a YouTube video when he made the decision public today. "This cycle had the makings of the same result. A path to victory exists for both Frank Caprio and me, but with Rhode Island clinging to a late primary, a divisive costly battle would most likely result in the wrong leadership."
In terms of campaign fundraising, Lynch had struggled to keep pace with Caprio.
