An advocacy group opposing the new HPV vaccine requirement for seventh graders is raising money to bring the fight to the state capital. Their efforts may hit a roadblock.
A spokeswoman says some House republicans plan to pre-file legislation aimed at reversing a new HPV vaccine requirement for middle school students. Representatives Robert Nardolillo (R-Coventry) and Justin Price (R-Hopkinton, Exeter, Richmond) have spoken against the new requirement.
But House speaker Nicholas Mattiello’s office says he will oppose it. His spokesman says Mattiello believes that decision is best left to the Department of Health. And he prefers not address the issue in legislation.
Meanwhile, advocacy group Rhode Islanders Against the HPV Vaccine Mandate plan more events to raise awareness about their cause. The group will gather for a “meet and greet” and panel discussion October 2nd at Coventry High School, according to a statement from the group.
The CDC has been recommending the HPV vaccine for adolescent boys and girls for several years. Rhode Island is the first to require it.
