This is a story about a young woman who became addicted to drugs, ran afoul of her mob-connected suppliers and was murdered in a motel room.

No, it’s not a new episode of “Crimetown,” the popular podcast about Providence and the Mafia. It’s the real-life story of Joan Carroll, whose adult daughter Leah has written about her in a book called “Down City: A Daughter’s Story of Love, Memory and Murder.”

It’s a memoir of growing up in Rhode Island in the 1980s and 90s. And it’s the story of how Carroll came to find out the details of her mother’s murder and her father Kevin’s eventual suicide.
