More Candidates Join Race For State Senate Seat Formerly Held By Paiva Weed

Apr 18, 2017

Two more candidates have joined the race to fill the state Senate seat vacated by former Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed.

Republican Mike Smith announced a run Tuesday for the District 13 seat. He's the first GOP candidate in the race.

Meanwhile, a captain with the Newport Fire Department, David Hanos, has joined the Democratic field for Paiva Weed’s Senate seat.

The other Democratic candidates are David Allard, Dawn Euer, and John Florez.

A July 18 primary will narrow the field of candidates. The general election for the District 13 seat will be August 22.

Paiva Weed last month announced she was leaving the Senate to take a job as the head of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island.
