Most of state under heat advisory, cooling locations open in Providence

Providence, R.I. – The National Weather Service is placing nearly the entire state under a heat advisory today.

Meteorologists say the heat and humidity will combine to produce a heat index ranging from 100 to 104. Newport County and Block Island are the only section of the state that are not under the heat advisory.

Meanwhile, the city of Providence is opening a cooling center at the Providence Career and Technical Academy auditorium at the corner of Fricker and Cranston streets, and the Alvarez High School Cafeteria on Adelaide Avenue.

City officials say residents can find shelter at several library branches, and that they have also extended water park hours at nine locations.
