PROVIDENCE, RI – Myra Kraft, the wife of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, died of cancer. A widely respected philanthropist, she is being mourned in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Myra Hiatt Kraft never knew a day of want in her life. The daughter of a wealthy Worcester packaging manufacturer, she parlayed her fortune into her husband's purchase of the thrice Super Bowl winning New England Patriots. But it was not in her nature to sit around and play bridge. She gave of her time and resources to a host of charities and in the process earned widespread admiration.
"She was one of the best," she says.
Diane "Dee Dee" Whitman of Providence knew her for 20 years.
"She was one of the kindest and we said of all the people associated with the team she was probably the strongest and most disciplined," she says.
Kraft, named one of the 20 most powerful women in Boston by Boston Magazine, died at the age of 68 after what the team is calling a "courageous" battle with cancer. She leaves behind her husband, Robert, and four sons.
