The summer meeting of the National Governors Association formally gets under way Thursday in Providence.

Gov. Gina Raimondo is the official host of the event, which is drawing a mix of Republican and Democratic governors from around the US. More than 30 governors are expected to attend the gathering.

Topics to be discussed during the three-day meeting include attracting international investment, curbing the opioid epidemic, and the future of health care.

Friday, Vice President Mike Pence and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will keynote a session on the global economy. Corporate executives like former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Tesla CEO Elon Musk are also expected.

Attendees are slated to take part in a series of other sessions, many of them closed to the media, and social events like a WaterFire lighting.

Some streets near the Convention Center will be closed due to the governors’ meeting, and heavy traffic is expected nearby. State Police say any protesters will be directed to the intersection of Mathewson and Sabin streets.
