Navy employee, contractor accused of kickbacks

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Federal prosecutors have charged two men in a kickback scheme involving millions of dollars in Navy funds.

Providence allege that Ralph Mariano padded Naval contracts issued to a Georgia company. That contractor, Anjan Dutta Gupta, allegedly funneled the money back to Mariano and his relatives.

U. S. Attorney for Rhode Island Peter Neronha said Mariano and Dutta-Gupta are alleged to have engaged in a complex bribery kickback scheme in which Mariano added funds to Navy contracts for work that was never done.

Both men are charged with bribery, a federal crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
