New Bedford Superintendent Search Approaches Finish Line

The search for a superintendent for New Bedford Public Schools is coming to a close. Four finalists were announced Wednesday, including two with connections to Rhode Island.

Before Serving as the current superintendent in Maynard, Massachusetts, Robert J. Gerardi Jr. was superintendent of Woonsocket Schools from 2008 to 2011. Gerardi received his bachelor's degree in industrial arts from Rhode Island College, a master’s degree in educational administration from
Providence College, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from Boston College. He then went on to teach technology in Burrillville Public schools before moving to Massachusetts. In 1996, he returned to Rhode Island to be assistant principle in Pawtucket Public Schools until 2003. He then became a principal in Cranston Public Schools from 2003-2005. After that, he became Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum in North Providence Public Schools before becoming superintendent in Woonsocket.

The current superintendent in Portsmouth, Ana C. Riley is also among the finalist in the running. She has held the position since 2014. Riley received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Regis College, and a master's degree in school administration from Fitchburg State University. Also, she has completed coursework toward an Ed.D. in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University and toward a certificate of advanced educational leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She began as a science teacher in Massachusetts before moving on to assistant principal in Fall River. After, she became a principal in Fall River from 2003 to 2008. Then, she moved on to become assistant superintendent of Dartmouth Public Schools from 2008-2011, and then superintendent until 2014.

The other two finalists include Thomas Anderson, current superintendent of Randolph Public Schools, and Heather Larkin, Director of Guidance and Pupil Personnel Services at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School.
