A new poll in the governor’s race comes out Tuesday from The Providence Journal and WPRI. It’s the second poll in the governor’s race since the primary. It comes with just three weeks remaining before the general election.
The first poll came out in late September, and showed Democratic state treasurer Gina Raimondo with a slight lead over Republican Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
Raimondo garnered 42 percent of the vote, while Fung had 37. Eleven percent of people polled were still undecided. Since that time, campaign filings show Fung has more money to spend. Though Raimondo spent millions on a hard-won three way primary.
Major political figures from outside the state have also gotten involved. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stumped for Fung last week; Mitt Romney is scheduled to be in town this week. On the democratic side Hillary Clinton is slated to campaign for Raimondo, and President Barack Obama is also expected to be in Rhode Island this week. It is unclear whether he will campaign for Raimondo.
And while registered Democrats far outstrip Republicans in Rhode Island, the state hasn’t elected a Democratic governor in more than a decade.
