Rhode Island Hospital has added another major research center to its portfolio. The new center will focus on stem cell biology.
The new lab comes thanks to a $300,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to help fuel basic biological research. It’s that kind of basic research – understanding how and why things work – that experts say make discoveries of more practical applications possible. The new lab will focus on stem cells, which serve as a building block for other kinds of cells and show promise in repairing damaged tissue in the body. Lifespan hospital system officials say the new research space represents one of the first steps in transforming the Coro Building in Providence’s Jewelry District into a biomedical research hub.
