Newport. R.I. – Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri and other officials are in Newport to welcome the America's Cup trophy and make a push to bring the race back to the city for the first time since the 1980s.
The BMW Oracle Racing sailing team won the 33rd America's Cup regatta in February and are taking the trophy on a victory tour, which stops in Newport on Thursday.
Newport wants to host the 34th edition of the competition.
It's competing against San Francisco and San Diego, and BMW Oracle owner Larry Ellison has publicly stated that San Francisco is his first choice.
He's not expected to be in Newport with the trophy, casting doubt on the city's chances.
A decision isn't expected for several months.
