PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Preservation Society of Newport County is offering a $5 rebate as a way to lure tourists to the city's historic mansions.
The Newport Preservation Society says it hopes to attract visitors from around New England by offering a rebate to help offset rising gas prices.
Tourism had been picking up in the past year, but then it started to drop noticeably in March. The Preservation Society's John Rodman says they are proud to give families a little break.
"If the gas price is what's hurting people then our idea is that we'll give you some money toward that," says Rodman.
The Newport Preservation Society will be giving out the $5 rebates until Memorial Day.
