PROVIDENCE, RI – Attorneys for Occupy Providence protesters and the city of Providence will square off Thursday before a Superior Court judge who has agreed to mediate the dispute. The city is trying to evict them based on an ordinance that closes parks after 9 p.m. The protesters claim they have a first amendment right to assembly that overrides the ordinance.
Meanwhile, the city of Boston is also going to court in an attempt to evict protesters from the city's Dewey Square Park. The city has filed a 200-page document in court arguing that while the protesters have the right to free speech, they have no right to live on public property. An attorney for the protesters says they plan to stay and fight the eviction.
The mediation session before Judge Alice Gibney begins at 2 p.m.
